All of our products are 100% bronze (or aluminum) and are designed and manufactured
in the United States. Our prices are already discounted. If you find
prices that are lower, we recommend that you confirm the information. Remember,
you get what you pay for. Read "The Facts" below.
THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS
Firstly, all of our cast plaques, be they bronze plaques or aluminum
plaques are manufactured using the sand casting process. In the sand casting process,
a pattern is made of the text and graphics. The pattern can be made from any substance
but typically, wood, foam core, plastic and polymer are used.
Once the pattern is made, a fine sand/epoxy mixture is poured around and over the
pattern, packed down and then the pattern is removed leaving the image of the pattern
in the sand.
Then, paths are formed in the sand (this is typically part of the pattern process)
that channel the molten bronze into the pattern.
The molten bronze is then poured into the form, let cool and then the rough plaque
is removed from the sand.
Lastly, the rough plaque is tooled and finished.
This of course is a VERY abbreviated description of quite a complicated process.
The process of manufacturing a cast bronze or cast aluminum plaque consists of many
many more steps.
THE PLAQUE ITSELF
A cast bronze plaque is quite heavy. A quick estimate of weight is to take the height
times the width and divide by 10. So, the weight of a 10 by 10 cast bronze plaque
is roughly 10 times 10 divided by 10 or 100 divided by 10 which equals 10 pounds.
As you can imagine, a larger cast bronze plaque can be almost unmanageable in terms
of weight. For instance a 36 inch by 36 inch plaque would weigh 36 times 36 divided
by 10 which equals 129 pounds. This would equal over 150 pounds in the shipping
Due to this dramatic increase in weight, cast plaque, as they get larger, are manufactured
with a 'hollowed out back' to lighten the overall weight.
(*) Plaques under about 250 square inches are typically cast solid with a 3/8"
to 1/2" thickness with a flat back . Because the plaque is only 3/8" thick,
a boss and stud mount has only about 2-3 threads for the stud to screw into the
back of the plaque. The 'boss' in this case, is nothing more than a shallow hole
tapped to take the threaded stud.
(*) Plaques over 250 square inches, are typically cast with a hollowed out back
with a apparent thickness as seen from the side, of about 3/4". In this case,
and due to the increased weight of these larger plaques actual 'bosses' which are
raised places on the rear of the plaque, are cast into the back of the plaque. It
is impossible to cast this type of 'boss' on a smaller plaque due to the fact that
the smaller plaques are also thinner.
The decision as to the type of back to be cast is at the discretion of the production
department and is NOT a customer option.
(*) The number of boss and stud mounting points is variable, some plaques have 2,
some have 4 and some may have 6 or 8. This decision is at the discretion of the
production department and is NOT a customer option.
(*) All of these dimensions and numbers are approximate and at the discretion of
the production department and are not a customer option.
The customer can and should specify the type of mount to be used such as through
screws, bolts or the hidden boss and stud mounting. Each has its place.
It is a well known law of economics that states that you can only have 2 of the
High Quality - Good Service - Low Price
We believe we (The Bronze Plaque)
offer the best of all three.
Bronze is forever!!! The alloy bronze is created by melting down ingots of
copper, tin and lead in an 88/10/2 ratio. When the name is preceded by another
word or letter in its name, it is probably not the real alloy. Faux bronze
is NOT bronze. By definition, Faux is "A French word meaning false, fake,
imitation or artificial." Bronze mixed with scrap iron is not bronze
and it will rust over time. Metallic coated plastic made to look like bronze
is not bronze. Etched zinc, faux bronze and bronze metallic coated plastic are all
products sold as low cost alternates to real bronze. When new, many of these
cheaper products look like real bronze and it is almost impossible for the
average consumer to tell the difference between bronze and one of these imitation
products. Some retailers in order to make a sale will use these products and not
openly state what their materials are and hope that in the 2 or so years it takes
for these products to deteriorate, the customer will forget from whom it was purchased.
While these faux bronze products may be usable for your purpose, they can
not outlive real bronze.
Service is as important as price and quality. What good is low cost and high
quality if the end result is late delivery or just plain unacceptable because the
supplier 'sold you what you asked for'. Service not only includes being friendly
when a customer places an order. It also includes the ability (and knowledge)
to tell a customer that something they are requesting may not be right and then
working with the customer to achieve a properly designed product. Making a
sale is not enough for the people at The Bronze Plaque.
We must feel that the end product is the best possible design and we are willing
to put The Bronze Plaque name on it.
Our prices are discounted. We do not offer a low come on price and then add
cost for each character, item of hardware or delivery. Our prices are complete.
When you submit your on line quote request, you will get a full and
accurate quotation and a convenient link for purchasing your plaque on-line.
Even if you have to change wording or mounting hardware after our quote, our price
will not change as long as the text still fits on the same size plaque.
Remember - as in most things in the world today - You get what you pay for.
ALL WE CAN DO IS PRESENT THE FACTS - IT IS UP TO YOU TO MAKE THE CHOICE.
